LIBRARY
Borrowing made simple. Never a late fee.
With friendly suggestions!
The Fan and Hyman Jacobs Library is a treasure trove hidden in plain sight, just a few steps off the main floor of Oheb Shalom.
With more than 5,000 items, there is something for everyone. Books on philosophy, biography, history, and holidays fill the shelves. The fiction, selected for all age levels, includes both modern and classic works by Jewish and Israeli authors. There are special areas for graphic novels and parenting advice.
Our librarian, Aileen Grossberg, is on site Sunday and Wednesday mornings, but you are welcome to visit whenever the building is open. You can also read Aileen's ongoing blog for book lovers.
For comments, suggestions, or requests, please contact the librarian.
Summer’s a great time to break out of your reading rut.
Do you only read biographies? Try a romance. (Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin)
Are you scientific minded? Immerse yourself in some historical fiction. (The Thread Collectors by Shaunna J. Edwards)
Is it too hot to cook? Read a cookbook for some ideas for warm weather foods. (52 Shabbats by Faith Kramer)
You’re bombarded with words all day? Pick up a graphic novel. (Whistle: A New Gotham City Hero by E. Lockhart)
Fed up with the here and now? Try fantasy. (The Hidden Palace: A Novel of the Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker)
Are you a “serious” reader? Try something with some humor. (The Floating Feldmans by Elyssa Friedlander)
Lastly, from the world of general reading is Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus. It’s poignant, thoughtful, laugh-out-loud funny, and perfect for reading if you’ve seen Barbie.
Adults should feel free to cross over to young adult books many of which are perfect for stress free summer reading.
The Jacobs Library is filled with reading treasures for all ages. Come in, check the catalog online at home (direct link, above right) or send me an email (library@ohebshalom.org).
