Guest Scholar: Rabbi Elie Kaunfer - "How Can I Pray What I Don’t Believe?”

On this special morning, we pay tribute to the memory of Rabbi Alexander Shapiro z”l, Oheb Shalom’s rabbi from 1972-1992. After testimonials from Rabbi Shapiro’s family, our guest scholar, Rabbi Elie Kaunfer, will guide us in exploring Jewish prayer. Are traditional prayer formulas able to express our own values? What should we do when we disagree with a prayer’s content? Rabbi Kaunfer will present a new approach to interpreting the Siddur.

Rabbi Kaunfer is co-founder and President of Mechon Hadar, a traditional, egalitarian yeshiva on the Upper West Side that provides opportunities for intense Torah study, and also seeks to re-invigorate Jewish prayer.
