Rabbi Shapiro Memorial Breakfast & Lecture
Sunday, April 30, 2023 • 9 Iyyar 5783
10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
All are welcome to Oheb Shalom's Annual Breakfast & Lecture, honoring the late Rabbi Shapiro z"l. Our guest speaker will be Dr. Yehuda Kurtzer, author, scholar and President of the Shalom Hartman Institute of North America. He will discuss the pertinent topic of what Israel means to American Jews.
- Liberal Jews are experiencing discord around Israeli politics and policy and increasingly questioning the centrality of Israel in Jewish life. The most recent Israeli elections and pending judicial reform illustrate the yawning gap between American Jewish and Israeli political inclinations, and the normalization of extreme right-wing politicians in the Israeli electorate tests the boundaries of the Israel-diaspora relationship, especially with growing anti-Israel sentiment taking root as a pillar of American progressive politics. Given the realities of modern Israel and the evolution of American Jewish political identity, we must search for new answers to an enduring question: what should Israel mean to American Jews? -
This event is graciously funded by Betty Feinberg in memory of Rabbi Alexander Shapiro z"l to honor his passionate commitment to Jewish learning.
